This Spitfire Mk.Vb was built by Vickers-Armstrong (Supermarine), Castle Bromwich. It was taken on strength with No.243 (F) Squadron on the 27th of June 1942 at R.A.F. Station Ouston, Northumberland. The squadron maintained a detachment at Greatham, Durham. Greatham was an alternate airfield for R.A.F. Station West Hartlepool. Spitfire EN821 briefly served with No.243 Squadron until transferred to No.65 'East India' (F) Squadron on the 28th of October 1942.
